Bisanadi National Reserve, Isiolo, Kenya, Africa

Bisanadi National Reserve is a protected area located in Isiolo County, Kenya. It is situated approximately 30 kilometers northeast of the town of Isiolo.

Visual Characteristics

The reserve is characterized by arid and semi-arid scrubland, acacia woodlands, and dry riverbeds. Dominant vegetation includes various species of Acacia and Commiphora. The terrain is generally flat to gently undulating, with occasional rocky outcrops. Water sources are primarily seasonal rivers and boreholes.

Location & Access Logistics

Access to Bisanadi National Reserve is via the Isiolo-Garba Tula road (C77). The turn-off to the reserve entrance is approximately 30 kilometers from Isiolo town. The reserve is accessible by 4x4 vehicles, especially during the wet season. There is a designated park entrance gate. No public transport directly serves the reserve; visitors typically arrange private transport or guided tours from Isiolo.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Bisanadi National Reserve was established in 1979 as a protected area to conserve its unique semi-arid ecosystem and wildlife. Ecologically, it falls within the Somali-Masai biome, adapted to low rainfall and high temperatures. The area supports a variety of wildlife adapted to these arid conditions.

Key Highlights & Activities

Wildlife viewing is the primary activity. Species commonly observed include Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk, Somali ostrich, and various antelope species such as dik-dik and oryx. Birdwatching is also a significant activity, with numerous resident and migratory species present. Game drives are conducted on designated tracks within the reserve.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Basic infrastructure within the reserve includes a park entrance gate and a network of dirt tracks for game drives. There are no permanent visitor centers, restaurants, or shops within the reserve boundaries. Restroom facilities are generally absent. Cell phone signal is intermittent and unreliable. Visitors should carry sufficient water and supplies.

Best Time to Visit

The best time for wildlife viewing is during the dry season, from June to October, when animals congregate around permanent water sources. The cooler months, from July to September, offer more comfortable temperatures for game drives. The wet season, from November to May, can make some tracks impassable for standard vehicles.

Facts & Legends

Bisanadi is known for its significant population of Grevy's zebra, a critically endangered species. A specific tip for visitors is to look for gerenuk, a long-necked antelope, which often stands on its hind legs to reach higher vegetation.
