Bokor Hill Station, Kampot, Cambodia, Asia
Bokor Hill Station is a former French colonial resort located atop Bokor Mountain in Kampot Province, Cambodia.
This site comprises a collection of abandoned buildings constructed during the French colonial era.
Visual Characteristics
The primary structures are constructed from concrete and stone. Notable buildings include a casino, a church, and a royal residence, all exhibiting signs of decay and overgrowth. The architecture reflects early 20th-century European colonial styles. Vegetation, primarily dense forest, surrounds and encroaches upon the structures.
Location & Access Logistics
Bokor Hill Station is situated approximately 35 kilometers northwest of Kampot city center. Access is via National Road 3, then turning onto the Bokor Mountain Road (also known as the Bokor National Park Road). This road is paved and ascends the mountain. Parking is available at designated areas near the main structures. Public transport directly to the station is limited; private vehicles or organized tours are the primary means of access.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Construction of Bokor Hill Station began in 1920 by the French colonial administration as a mountain retreat. The original purpose was to provide a cooler climate for French officials and settlers. The site is located within Bokor National Park, an area characterized by montane forest ecosystems.
Key Highlights & Activities
Exploration of the abandoned colonial buildings, including the Bokor Palace Hotel and Casino, the Catholic Church, and the Royal Residence. Observation of the surrounding forest and views from the mountain plateau. Photography of the decaying structures and natural landscape.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Restrooms are available at the visitor center and near some of the newer facilities. Shade is provided by the existing structures and natural tree cover. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally available in most areas. Food vendors and small restaurants operate near the main visitor areas.
Best Time to Visit
The best time of day for photography is generally in the morning or late afternoon when the light is less direct. The dry season, from November to April, offers clearer weather. The mountain can be subject to fog and rain, particularly during the wet season (May to October).
Facts & Legends
A local legend suggests that the abandoned casino is haunted by the spirits of gamblers who lost their fortunes. The site was abandoned by the French in the 1950s and later occupied by the Khmer Rouge.
