Bokor National Park, Kampot, Cambodia, Asia
Bokor National Park is a protected area located in the Kampot Province of Cambodia. It encompasses a mountain plateau and surrounding lowland forests.
Visual Characteristics
The plateau features a cooler climate with sparse, stunted trees adapted to wind and altitude. Remnants of French colonial architecture, including the Bokor Palace Hotel and Casino and the Catholic Church, are present. The landscape includes waterfalls such as Popokvil Waterfall, which varies in flow seasonally. Vegetation is primarily tropical forest transitioning to montane grassland at higher elevations.
Location & Access Logistics
Bokor National Park is situated approximately 35 kilometers northwest of Kampot city. Access is via National Road 3, then turning onto the well-maintained Bokor Mountain Road (also known as TL01). The drive to the summit takes approximately 45-60 minutes from the park entrance. Parking is available at designated areas near the main attractions on the plateau. Public transport directly to the summit is limited; private vehicles or organized tours are the primary means of access.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The park was established as a national park in 1993. The French colonial buildings were constructed in the early 20th century as a hill station and casino. The plateau's geological formation is primarily sandstone and laterite. Ecologically, it represents a transition zone between lowland evergreen forests and higher-altitude montane ecosystems, supporting unique flora and fauna.
Key Highlights & Activities
Visitors can explore the abandoned Bokor Palace Hotel and Casino, the Catholic Church, and the Royal Residence. Hiking trails are available, including routes to waterfalls like Popokvil Waterfall. Observation points offer views of the surrounding countryside and coastline. Photography of the colonial ruins and natural scenery is a common activity.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Restrooms are available at the visitor center and near some of the main attractions. Limited food and beverage vendors operate on the plateau, primarily around the main tourist hubs. Shade is available near buildings and in forested areas. Cell phone signal (4G) is generally available on the plateau.
Best Time to Visit
The best time for clear views and comfortable temperatures is during the dry season, from November to April. Mornings often provide the clearest light for photography of the architecture and landscape. Popokvil Waterfall is most impressive during and immediately after the rainy season (May to October).
Facts & Legends
A local legend suggests that the abandoned Bokor Palace Hotel and Casino is haunted by the spirits of its former patrons and workers. The site was also used as a filming location for the Cambodian film "The Last Reel."
