Boulder City Historic District is a designated historic area located in Boulder City, Nevada, USA.
This district preserves the original layout and architecture of the city established during the construction of the Hoover Dam.
Visual Characteristics
The district features a grid-like street plan with a consistent architectural style. Buildings are primarily constructed from concrete, stucco, and brick, often painted in muted earth tones. Many structures are single-story or two-story, reflecting early 20th-century American vernacular architecture. Landscaping includes mature trees and drought-tolerant desert plants.
Location & Access Logistics
The district is situated in the center of Boulder City. It is approximately 40 kilometers (25 miles) southeast of Las Vegas. Access is via US Route 93. Ample street parking is available throughout the district, with some designated public parking lots. Public transport options are limited; the RTC Southern Nevada bus system serves Boulder City, with stops near the district's perimeter.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Boulder City was founded in 1931 by the U.S. government to house workers constructing the Hoover Dam. The city was designed by the National Park Service and the Bureau of Reclamation. Its original purpose was to provide a controlled, dry environment for dam workers, separate from the saloons and gambling prevalent in other nearby settlements. The area is situated in the Mojave Desert ecosystem.
Key Highlights & Activities
Walking tours of the historic district are available. Visitors can explore the Boulder City/Hoover Dam Museum located within the district. Shopping for local crafts and antiques in the historic storefronts is a primary activity. Photography of the period architecture is also common.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Restrooms are available in public buildings and some businesses. Shade is provided by mature trees along sidewalks and some building overhangs. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally reliable within the district. Food vendors and restaurants are located along the main streets.
Best Time to Visit
The best time of day for photography is generally mid-morning or late afternoon to avoid harsh midday sun and capture architectural details. The most favorable months for visiting are October through April, when temperatures are cooler. Summer months (June-August) can experience extreme heat.
Facts & Legends
Boulder City was intentionally designed as a "dry" town, meaning alcohol sales were prohibited for decades. This policy was a deliberate measure to maintain order and productivity among the dam workers. The prohibition on alcohol sales was only lifted in 1969.
