The Brooklyn Heights Promenade is a 0.53-mile (0.85 km) elevated linear park situated in Brooklyn, New York City. It offers unobstructed views of the Manhattan skyline and the East River.
Visual Characteristics
The promenade is constructed from concrete and features a paved walkway. It is bordered by low concrete barriers and planters containing seasonal flowers and shrubs. The walkway is approximately 10 feet (3 meters) wide. The primary visual element is the expansive vista of Lower Manhattan across the East River.
Location & Access Logistics
The promenade extends from Montague Street to Columbia Heights in Brooklyn Heights. It is accessible via the Brooklyn Bridge pedestrian walkway or by public transport. The nearest subway stations are High Street–Brooklyn Bridge (A, C trains) located 0.2 miles (0.32 km) North-West, and Clark Street (2, 3 trains) located 0.3 miles (0.48 km) South-West. Parking is limited in the surrounding residential streets; metered street parking is available but often occupied. The promenade is situated above the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway (I-278).
Historical & Ecological Origin
The promenade was constructed between 1958 and 1961 as part of a major urban renewal project that involved covering a section of the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway. The original purpose was to provide residents with recreational space and scenic views while mitigating the impact of the highway.
Key Highlights & Activities
Walking and jogging along the length of the promenade. Observing the Manhattan skyline, including the Brooklyn Bridge, Manhattan Bridge, and various skyscrapers. Photography of the cityscape, particularly during sunrise and sunset. Sitting on benches to rest and view the river traffic.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Restrooms are available at the western end of the promenade near Pier 1. Benches are positioned along the entire length, providing seating. Shade is minimal, primarily provided by trees planted along the edges. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally strong. No food vendors are located directly on the promenade; however, numerous restaurants and cafes are situated in the adjacent Brooklyn Heights neighborhood.
Best Time to Visit
For photography, early morning (sunrise) and late afternoon (sunset) offer optimal lighting conditions for the Manhattan skyline. The months of April through October generally provide the most pleasant weather for outdoor activity. High tide or low tide does not significantly impact the viewing experience from the promenade.
Facts & Legends
The promenade was famously featured in the opening credits of the television series "Sex and the City." A lesser-known fact is that the promenade sits directly above a section of the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway, effectively acting as a lid for the highway.
