The park was established in 1847 as Washington Park and was renamed Fort Greene Park in 1867. It was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, the landscape architects also responsible for Central Park. The site was formerly a defensive fortification during the Revolutionary War. The Prison Ship Martyrs' Monument, dedicated in 1908, commemorates American prisoners of war who died on British prison ships during the Revolutionary War.
