Castara Beach, Scarborough, Trinidad and Tobago, North America

Castara Beach is a coastal area located on the island of Tobago, within the nation of Trinidad and Tobago.

It is situated on the island's northwestern coast.

Visual Characteristics

The beach features dark volcanic sand. The water is typically clear with moderate wave action. The shoreline is backed by dense tropical vegetation, including coconut palms and various flowering shrubs. The bay is partially enclosed by rocky headlands.

Location & Access Logistics

Castara Beach is approximately 35 kilometers northwest of Scarborough. Access is via the Claude Noel Highway, transitioning to the Northside Road. The drive from Scarborough takes approximately 45 minutes. Parking is available along the roadside adjacent to the beach, with capacity for approximately 20 vehicles. Public transport options are limited; local maxi-taxis (minibuses) serving the Castara route operate from Scarborough's main bus terminal, with the last service typically departing mid-afternoon.

Historical & Ecological Origin

The beach is a natural formation resulting from coastal erosion and sediment deposition of volcanic origin. The surrounding area is part of Tobago's tropical rainforest ecosystem, characterized by high biodiversity.

Key Highlights & Activities

Swimming is possible in the bay. Snorkeling can be undertaken near the rocky areas at either end of the beach, particularly during calmer sea conditions. Fishing from the shore is a common activity for locals. Hiking trails lead from the village into the adjacent rainforest.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Restrooms are available at the Castara village center, approximately 100 meters from the main beach access. Shade is provided by natural tree cover and a few small gazebos. Cell phone signal (4G) is generally available. Small local food stalls operate near the village square, offering snacks and drinks.

Best Time to Visit

For photography, early morning or late afternoon provides optimal lighting conditions due to the angle of the sun. The dry season, from January to May, offers the most consistent weather. High tide is generally preferred for swimming.

Facts & Legends

Local folklore suggests that the dark sand of Castara Beach possesses healing properties, attributed to its volcanic composition. A specific tip for visitors is to explore the small tidal pools that form on the western headland during low tide, which often contain marine life.
