Visual Characteristics
The volcano's summit reaches an elevation of 4,944 meters (16,220 feet). Its slopes are characterized by steep, rocky terrain, with sparse vegetation at higher altitudes and denser cloud forest lower down. The peak is often snow-capped, depending on seasonal precipitation.
Location & Access Logistics
Cerro Cotacachi is situated approximately 10 kilometers northwest of the town of Cotacachi. Access is primarily via unpaved roads from Cotacachi, requiring a 4x4 vehicle for the final ascent to the trailhead at Laguna Cuicocha. Public transport does not reach the trailhead; taxis or private vehicles are necessary. Parking is available at the Laguna Cuicocha visitor area.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Cerro Cotacachi is a Quaternary stratovolcano, part of the Cordillera Occidental of the Ecuadorian Andes. Its formation is attributed to volcanic activity over thousands of years. The surrounding landscape, including Laguna Cuicocha, is a result of a caldera collapse event.
Key Highlights & Activities
Hiking is the primary activity. The trail around Laguna Cuicocha, located on the volcano's flank, offers views of the crater lake and surrounding mountains. The summit of Cerro Cotacachi itself is a challenging climb, typically undertaken by experienced mountaineers. Birdwatching is also possible in the lower forest zones.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Basic facilities, including restrooms and limited food vendors, are available at the Laguna Cuicocha visitor area. Cell phone signal is intermittent to non-existent at higher elevations. Shade is limited on the upper slopes.
Best Time to Visit
The dry season, from June to September, generally offers clearer skies and more stable weather conditions for hiking. Mornings typically provide better visibility before cloud cover develops. There are no tide-dependent activities.
Facts & Legends
Local legend associates Cerro Cotacachi with the indigenous deity "Cotacachi," considered a protector of the region. The volcano is also known for its significant biodiversity, including various species of orchids and Andean condors.
