Parque Nacional Cotacachi Cayapas, Cotacachi, Ecuador, South America

Parque Nacional Cotacachi Cayapas is a protected area located in the Imbabura and Esmeraldas provinces of Ecuador.

This national park encompasses diverse ecosystems, ranging from Andean páramo to tropical rainforest.

Visual Characteristics

The park's Andean sector features high-altitude grasslands, rocky outcrops, and the prominent volcanic cone of Volcán Cotacachi. Vegetation includes páramo grasses, low shrubs, and scattered Polylepis trees. The Cayapas sector, at lower elevations, is characterized by dense, humid tropical rainforest with a closed canopy, numerous rivers, and a variety of arboreal and herbaceous plant life. Water bodies within the park, such as Laguna Cuicocha, are typically clear and reflect the surrounding topography.

Location & Access Logistics

The main access point to the Andean sector is via the E25 highway, turning onto the road towards Cuicocha. This road is paved and leads directly to the Laguna Cuicocha visitor area, approximately 15 kilometers west of Cotacachi. Parking is available at the Laguna Cuicocha site. Public transport options to Cotacachi are frequent from Quito and Otavalo; from Cotacachi, local taxis or pre-arranged transport are required to reach the park entrance. Access to the Cayapas sector is more remote, typically involving river transport from Esmeraldas province.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Parque Nacional Cotacachi Cayapas was established on August 11, 1979. Ecologically, the park protects the transition zone between the Andean highlands and the Chocó-Darién moist forests. The volcanic origins of the Andean sector are evident in the landscape, with Volcán Cotacachi being a stratovolcano. The Cayapas sector represents a significant portion of the biodiverse tropical rainforest ecosystem.

Key Highlights & Activities

Hiking is available on marked trails around Laguna Cuicocha, including a full circuit of the crater lake. Boat tours on Laguna Cuicocha offer views of the crater and its islands. Birdwatching is a primary activity in both sectors, with opportunities to observe Andean condors and various tropical species. In the Cayapas sector, guided canoe trips along rivers provide access to remote areas and wildlife viewing.

Infrastructure & Amenities

At Laguna Cuicocha, there are visitor facilities including restrooms, designated picnic areas, and interpretive signage. Limited food vendors may be present near the parking area. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally available at the Laguna Cuicocha site but can be intermittent within the park's interior. Shade is provided by natural vegetation and some covered seating areas. The Cayapas sector has minimal infrastructure, with basic shelters and limited amenities.

Best Time to Visit

For the Andean sector, the dry season from June to September offers clearer skies and more stable weather for hiking and photography. The best time of day for photography is typically mid-morning to early afternoon when sunlight illuminates the volcanic landscape. For the Cayapas sector, the drier months from December to March are preferable for river travel, though rain is possible year-round.

Facts & Legends

Laguna Cuicocha is known for its caldera lake, formed by a volcanic eruption approximately 3,000 years ago. The lake contains two islands, one of which is inhabited by a small population of vicuñas introduced for conservation purposes. Local legend suggests the lake is a sacred site, with its name derived from the Kichwa words "kuta chi" meaning "water of the hummingbird."
