Chateau d Angers, Angers, France, Europe

The Château d'Angers is a massive medieval fortress located on a rocky promontory overlooking the Maine River in the city of Angers, Maine-et-Loire. It is a national monument and a UNESCO World Heritage site, currently housing the 14th-century Apocalypse Tapestry.

Visual Characteristics

The fortress is defined by its 660-meter-long defensive perimeter, which features seventeen massive towers constructed from alternating layers of dark schist and white limestone, creating a horizontal striped effect. The towers are 30 meters high and 18 meters in diameter, originally topped with slate pepper-pot roofs. Inside the walls, the site contains a late Gothic royal residence, a chapel, and several formal gardens, including a vineyard and a medieval-style vegetable plot.

Location & Access Logistics

The chateau is situated at 2 Promenade du Bout du Monde, approximately 0.8 kilometers north of the Angers Saint-Laud Train Station. Access is via the A11 motorway or by the Irigo tramway (Line A) at the "Ralliement" or "Molière" stops. Public parking is available at the Parking Kennedy or Parking République, both within 300 meters of the main drawbridge.

Historical & Ecological Origin

The site was originally a Roman hill fort before the current fortress was built between 1230 and 1240 by Louis IX (Saint Louis) to protect the border of the French kingdom from the Dukes of Brittany. In the 14th and 15th centuries, the Dukes of Anjou transformed the interior into a princely residence. Geologically, the castle is built on a dark slate (schist) outcrop that provided both a natural defense and the primary building material for its walls.

Key Highlights & Activities

The primary attraction is the Apocalypse Tapestry, a 100-meter-long medieval weaving displayed in a purpose-built darkened gallery to preserve its vegetable-dye colors. Visitors can walk the entire circuit of the wall ramparts, providing views of the Maine River and the Doutre district. Guided tours are available for the royal apartments and the 15th-century Saint-Laud chapel.

Infrastructure & Amenities

The facility includes a gift shop, a bookstore, and a seasonal café located within the inner courtyard. Public restrooms are available near the entrance and inside the tapestry gallery. The site has 5G cellular coverage, though the thick stone walls of the tapestry room block all signals. While the gardens and courtyard are accessible, the ramparts and upper floors of the residence require navigating steep stone staircases.

Best Time to Visit

Photography of the exterior striped towers is best in the morning when the sun hits the southern facade. The chateau is open daily from 10:00 to 17:30 (winter) or 18:30 (summer). June and July are the optimal months for viewing the formal gardens and the castle's hanging vines in full bloom.

Facts & Legends

A verified historical oddity is that the towers were significantly shortened during the French Wars of Religion by King Henry III, who ordered them dismantled so they could not be used by rebels; the project was abandoned, leaving the towers at their current flat-topped height. Local lore suggests the Apocalypse Tapestry was so undervalued in the 18th century that fragments were used as horse blankets and floor mats before being rediscovered and restored.
