Location & Access Logistics
The Clarno Unit is situated approximately 20 miles northwest of Fossil, Oregon. Access is via Oregon Route 218. From the intersection of US Route 26 and OR 218, travel approximately 20 miles northwest on OR 218. The main entrance is clearly marked. Parking is available at designated pull-offs and a small lot near the interpretive displays. No public transport services the Clarno Unit.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The Clarno Unit's geological formations date back to the Eocene epoch, approximately 45 to 55 million years ago. These deposits represent ancient floodplains and forests, preserved by volcanic ash falls. The area is classified as a fossiliferous sedimentary deposit, rich in plant and insect fossils.
Key Highlights & Activities
Hiking the short interpretive trail to the overlook provides views of the fossil beds. The main activity is observing the geological strata and fossil evidence. Photography of the rock formations is permitted. No camping or fires are allowed within the unit.

Restrooms are available at the main interpretive area. Shade is limited to the interpretive shelter. Cell phone signal is unreliable within the unit. No food vendors are present; visitors should bring their own supplies.

The best time of day for photography is during the morning or late afternoon when the sun's angle creates shadows that highlight the rock formations. The best months for visiting are May through October, avoiding potential winter road closures due to snow and ice. The John Day River's water level can fluctuate, but this does not significantly impact access to the main viewing areas.
