Historical & Ecological Origin

Originally known as the Place du Congo, this site was designated as a public gathering space by the Spanish colonial government in 1780. It served as a marketplace and a place where enslaved and free Black people could gather, trade, and practice their cultural traditions, including music and dance, on Sundays. The area is part of the Mississippi River Delta's alluvial plain, characterized by fertile soil.

Best Time to Visit

The best time for photography is in the morning or late afternoon when the sun angle creates longer shadows and softer light. The months of March through May and September through November offer the most temperate weather conditions. There are no tide-dependent activities associated with Congo Square.

Facts & Legends

Congo Square is considered the birthplace of jazz music in New Orleans, as the rhythmic drumming and dancing that occurred here influenced early jazz musicians. A specific historical oddity is the 1817 ordinance that allowed enslaved people to gather and dance in Congo Square on Sundays, provided they did not disturb the peace, which inadvertently fostered a unique cultural exchange.
