Dajti Ekspres Cable Car, Tirana, Albania, Europe
The Dajti Ekspres is a major aerial lift system that connects the eastern outskirts of Tirana to the upper reaches of Mount Dajti. It is the longest cable car in the Balkans, providing rapid transit from the urban center to the Dajti Mountain National Park.
Visual Characteristics
The cable car utilizes a monocable detachable gondola system featuring approximately 30 cabins, each colored white with blue accents and capable of holding eight passengers. The 4.7-kilometer line is supported by heavy-duty steel pylons that traverse steep limestone cliffs and dense beech and pine forests. At the upper station, the complex features the Dajti Tower Belvedere, a modern multi-story hotel and restaurant characterized by a distinctive cylindrical tower with a rotating bar.
Location & Access Logistics
The base station is located on Rruga Mahmut Allushi in the Porcelan district, approximately 5km east of Tirana’s city center. It is accessible via the "Porcelan" bus line (Line 11), which departs from behind the Clock Tower at Skanderbeg Square; a free shuttle bus often covers the final 1.5km uphill stretch from the bus stop to the station. Motorists can access the site via Rruga e Dajtit, where a large paved parking lot is available for a fee.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The Dajti Ekspres was constructed by the Austrian company Doppelmayr Garaventa Group, beginning in 2003 and opening to the public in 2005. Geologically, the cable car ascends the Dajti Mountain massif, part of the Kruja-Dajt tectonic zone, reaching an elevation of 1,613 meters at the summit station on the mountain balcony.
Key Highlights & Activities
The 15-minute ride provides 360-degree views of the city, the Adriatic Sea, and the mountain landscape. At the summit, activities include mini-golf, paragliding, mountain biking, and target shooting. The Maja e Tujanit hiking trail begins behind the upper station, leading to a peak with views of Lake Bovilla.
Infrastructure & Amenities
The upper station complex includes the Ballkoni i Dajtit restaurant, a revolving bar, and the Dajti Tower Belvedere Hotel. Public restrooms are available at both the base and summit stations. The area features 5G cellular coverage and free Wi-Fi within the hotel complex. Shaded picnic areas and children’s playgrounds are situated adjacent to the mountain station.
Best Time to Visit
The system typically operates Wednesday through Monday, from 09:00 to 18:30 (closed Tuesdays for maintenance). The best time for photography is during the late afternoon for sunset views over the Adriatic Sea. Clear winter days after snowfall offer the highest visibility, while summer visits are preferred for the temperature differential, which is often 5–10°C cooler than the city center.
Facts & Legends
The cable car travels at a speed of 6 meters per second, allowing it to transport up to 528 passengers per hour. A local tip for visitors is to check the summit's live webcam at the base station before purchasing tickets, as the mountain is frequently shrouded in "the Dajti cap"-a localized cloud cover that can obstruct the panoramic views even when Tirana is sunny.
