Historical Origin
The Johanneum was built in 1586 and is one of the oldest buildings in the Dresden Castle complex. It was converted into a museum in the 19th century and repurposed as the Transport Museum in 1952 under the GDR administration. The building was significantly damaged in 1945 and reconstructed in several phases to preserve its historic Renaissance exterior while modernizing the interior for heavy exhibits.

Facts & Legends
A technical oddity is the museum's "flight simulator," which allows users to virtually pilot aircraft over a digital recreation of historic Dresden. Historically, the building's ramp-still visible today-was designed so that horses and carriages could be driven directly into the upper stories of the royal stables.
