Eklingji Temple, Udaipur, India, Asia
Eklingji Temple is a Hindu temple complex located in the state of Rajasthan, India, approximately 22 kilometers north of Udaipur.
Visual Characteristics
The main temple is constructed from white marble and sandstone. It features a multi-storied spire (shikhara) and a pyramidal roof. The central deity is a four-faced idol of Lord Shiva, known as Eklingji, carved from black stone. The complex includes several smaller shrines and a large courtyard.
Location & Access Logistics
The temple is situated on National Highway 48 (formerly NH 8). It is approximately 22 kilometers from Udaipur city center. Ample parking is available at the site. Regular local buses operate from Udaipur's main bus stand to Eklingji. Taxis and auto-rickshaws are also readily available.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The original temple is believed to have been constructed in 734 AD by Bappa Rawal, the founder of the Guhil dynasty. The current structure is largely a reconstruction and renovation, with significant additions made by Maharana Raimal in the 15th century and Maharana Jagat Singh in the 17th century. The temple is dedicated to the tutelary deity of the Mewar rulers.
Key Highlights & Activities
Observation of the four-faced Eklingji idol is the primary activity. Visitors can explore the various subsidiary shrines within the complex. Photography is permitted in the outer courtyard but not inside the main sanctum. Devotional activities and darshan (viewing of the deity) are central to the visitor experience.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Restrooms are available within the temple complex. Shade is provided by the temple structures and surrounding trees. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally good in the area. Food vendors and small shops selling religious items are located outside the temple entrance.
Best Time to Visit
The best time of day for photography is early morning or late afternoon when the light is softer. The most favorable months for visiting are from October to March, when the weather is cooler and drier. The temple is open year-round.
Facts & Legends
A unique aspect of the Eklingji Temple is that the idol of the deity is not worshipped directly. Instead, a silver snake coiled around a stone is worshipped as a representation of Eklingji. The temple is considered the 'ruler' of Mewar, with the Maharana of Udaipur acting as its 'dewan' (chief minister).
