Elsamere Conservation Centre, Naivasha, Kenya, Africa

Elsamere Conservation Centre is a research and education facility located on the shores of Lake Naivasha in Kenya.

It was formerly the home of Joy Adamson, author of "Born Free."

Visual Characteristics

The main building is a colonial-era house constructed from local stone and timber. It features a red tile roof and verandas. The grounds include mature trees and gardens leading down to the lakefront. The lake itself is a large freshwater body with varying water levels.

Location & Access Logistics

Elsamere is situated approximately 3 kilometers south of Naivasha town center. Access is via the A104 highway, turning onto Moi South Lake Road. The entrance is clearly signposted. Parking is available on-site. Public transport to Naivasha town is frequent; from Naivasha town, local matatus (minibuses) or taxis can be hired to reach Elsamere.

Historical & Ecological Origin

The property was acquired by Joy and George Adamson in 1958. It served as their residence and a base for their conservation work, particularly with orphaned lions. The area is part of the Great Rift Valley, characterized by volcanic geology and a diverse ecosystem supporting numerous bird and mammal species.

Key Highlights & Activities

Visitors can tour the former Adamson residence, which now functions as a museum displaying artifacts and photographs related to their lives and work. Bird watching is a primary activity, with guided walks available. Boat trips on Lake Naivasha can be arranged for wildlife viewing. Educational talks on conservation are sometimes offered.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Restrooms are available. Shaded areas are provided by trees and verandas. Cell phone signal (4G) is generally reliable within the center. There are no on-site food vendors, but facilities for packed lunches are available. The nearest restaurants are in Naivasha town.

Best Time to Visit

The best time for bird watching is typically during the drier months of June to October. For photography, early morning and late afternoon offer optimal lighting conditions. Lake Naivasha is a freshwater lake, so tide levels are not a factor.

Facts & Legends

Elsamere is famously known as the home where Joy Adamson raised and rehabilitated Elsa the lioness, the subject of her book "Born Free." A specific tip for visitors is to look for the resident hippos often found grazing near the lake shore in the early morning or late evening.
