It offers visitors access to geothermally heated waters in a natural setting.
Visual Characteristics
The spa features several pools of varying temperatures, filled with mineral-rich water. The water color is typically a milky blue-green due to dissolved minerals. The surrounding landscape consists of volcanic rock formations and sparse, dry vegetation characteristic of the Rift Valley. The pools are integrated into the natural terrain, with concrete edging in some areas and natural rock in others.

Olkaria Geothermal Spa is situated approximately 15 kilometers south of Naivasha town. Access is via the A104 highway, turning onto the C58 road towards Hell's Gate National Park. The spa is located within the park boundaries, requiring an entrance fee. Parking is available at the facility. Public transport to Naivasha town is available via bus services from Nairobi. From Naivasha town, local matatus (minibuses) can be hired to reach the park entrance and the spa.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The geothermal activity in the Olkaria region is a direct result of its location on the East African Rift Valley, a geologically active zone characterized by volcanic and tectonic processes. The hot springs are fed by underground geothermal reservoirs. The spa facilities were developed by the Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) as a way to utilize the geothermal resources for tourism and recreation, alongside power generation.
Key Highlights & Activities
Bathing in the geothermally heated pools is the primary activity. Visitors can move between pools of different temperatures. Walking paths allow exploration of the immediate geothermal area. Observation points offer views of the surrounding volcanic landscape.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Restrooms and changing facilities are available on-site. Limited shade is provided by natural rock formations and some man-made structures. Cell phone signal (4G) is generally available. There are no on-site food vendors; visitors are advised to bring their own provisions or dine in Naivasha town.
Best Time to Visit
The best time of day for photography is generally during the early morning or late afternoon when the light is softer and the steam rising from the pools is more visible. The dry season, from June to October, offers the most pleasant weather conditions with less rainfall. The spa is accessible year-round.
Facts & Legends
The geothermal area around Olkaria is one of the largest in Africa and is a significant source of renewable energy for Kenya. Local Maasai legends speak of the hot springs as a place of healing and spiritual significance, believed to be created by the earth's internal fires.
