The Empire Ranch is situated approximately 15 miles southeast of downtown Carson City. Access is via State Route 341 (Geiger Grade Road) and then a turn onto Empire Ranch Road. The final 1.5 miles of Empire Ranch Road are unpaved and can be rough; high-clearance vehicles are recommended. Parking is available at the main ranch site. No public transport services this location.

Established in 1860 by William M. "Curley" Bill Stewart, the Empire Ranch was one of Nevada's largest cattle ranches. It operated continuously for over a century, playing a key role in the state's agricultural development. Spring (April-May) offers more comfortable temperatures and potential wildflowers. Summer (June-August) can be very hot. Fall (September-October) provides cooler weather and autumn colors in the vegetation.

The ranch was famously featured in the 1961 film "The Misfits," starring Clark Gable, Marilyn Monroe, and Montgomery Clift. The property was acquired by the BLM in 1977 to preserve its historical and cultural significance.
