Erawan National Park, Kanchanaburi, Thailand, Asia
Erawan National Park is a protected area located in the Tenasserim Hills of Kanchanaburi Province, Thailand.
The park is primarily known for its seven-tiered Erawan Waterfall.
Visual Characteristics
The Erawan Waterfall features limestone and granite rock formations. Water cascades over multiple tiers, forming pools of varying depths. The water color ranges from clear to turquoise, influenced by mineral content and sunlight. The surrounding vegetation is dense tropical rainforest, characterized by tall trees, ferns, and various flowering plants.
Location & Access Logistics
Erawan National Park is situated approximately 22 kilometers northwest of Kanchanaburi city center. Access is via Highway 3199 (Kanchanaburi-Erawan Road). The park entrance has a designated parking area. Public transport options include local buses from Kanchanaburi Bus Terminal to Erawan Waterfall, with services running frequently throughout the day.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Erawan National Park was established on June 12, 1975, as Thailand's 12th national park. The geological formations are primarily karst limestone, shaped by millions of years of erosion. The ecosystem is classified as tropical evergreen forest, supporting a diverse range of flora and fauna.
Key Highlights & Activities
The primary activity is hiking the trail to the summit of Erawan Waterfall, which spans approximately 2 kilometers and passes through all seven tiers. Swimming is permitted in designated pools at several tiers of the waterfall. Wildlife observation is possible, with sightings of monkeys, deer, and various bird species.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Restrooms are available at the park entrance and at various points along the waterfall trail. Shaded rest areas are located at multiple tiers. Cell phone signal (4G) is generally available within the park. Food vendors and small restaurants are situated near the park entrance and at the base of the waterfall.
Best Time to Visit
The best time of day for photography at the waterfall is generally between 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM, when sunlight penetrates the canopy. The dry season, from November to April, offers the most favorable weather conditions. The wet season (May to October) results in higher water flow but can also bring increased rainfall.
Facts & Legends
The waterfall is named after Erawan, the three-headed white elephant from Hindu mythology, representing the waterfall's three main tiers. A specific tip for visitors is to wear water shoes for better traction on the slippery rocks, especially when climbing between tiers.
