Father Sheehan Park is a public green space located in Butte, Montana, USA.

This park encompasses 10 acres of developed recreational land.

Visual Characteristics

The park features a predominantly grassy terrain with mature deciduous trees providing canopy cover. A central paved pathway, approximately 1.5 meters wide, bisects the park. A small, man-made pond, roughly 50 meters in diameter, is situated in the western section. Playground equipment, including swings and a slide structure, is located in the eastern portion.

Location & Access Logistics

Father Sheehan Park is situated 2.5 kilometers south of Butte's central business district. Access is via Harrison Avenue, a primary arterial road. Parking is available in a dedicated lot on the park's north side, with capacity for approximately 40 vehicles. Public transport route 3 (South Harrison) stops directly at the park entrance on Harrison Avenue.

Historical & Ecological Origin

The land was acquired by the City of Butte in 1958 for public recreational use. Development of the park, including the pond construction and initial tree planting, occurred between 1960 and 1965. The area is situated on a plateau with underlying sedimentary rock formations.

Key Highlights & Activities

Activities include picnicking at designated tables, playground use, and walking the paved loop path. Fishing is permitted in the pond during designated seasons. Birdwatching is also a common activity due to the tree cover and pond.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Restrooms are available in a central building near the playground. Several picnic tables are distributed throughout the park, offering shade from the tree canopy. Cell phone signal (4G) is generally consistent within the park boundaries. No on-site food vendors are present; nearest facilities are located along Harrison Avenue.

Best Time to Visit

For photography, early morning (7:00 AM - 9:00 AM) offers favorable lighting conditions. The months of June through September provide the most pleasant weather for outdoor activities. The pond is accessible year-round, with no specific tide requirements.

Facts & Legends

A local anecdote suggests the pond was originally intended to be larger but construction was halted due to unforeseen underground mining shafts from Butte's historical copper mining era.
