Goshavank Monastery is a 12th-century Armenian monastic complex situated in the village of Gosh, within the Dilijan region of Armenia.

Visual Characteristics

The monastery complex comprises several stone structures constructed from rough-hewn grey and dark grey basalt. The primary churches, St. Gregory and St. Astvatsatsin, feature conical domes. The exterior walls are largely unadorned, with some relief carvings present around window and door frames. The bell tower, a separate structure, is a multi-tiered construction with arched openings.

Location & Access Logistics

Goshavank Monastery is located approximately 20 kilometers northeast of Dilijan town center. Access is via the M4 highway, turning onto the local road towards Gosh village. The final 3 kilometers to the monastery are unpaved but generally passable for passenger vehicles. Parking is available on-site, with capacity for approximately 20 vehicles. Public transport to Gosh village is limited; local taxis from Dilijan are the most direct option.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Construction of Goshavank began in 1188, initiated by Mkhitar Gosh, a prominent scholar and clergyman. The monastery served as a significant religious and educational center. The surrounding area is characterized by mixed deciduous forests, typical of the Dilijan National Park's temperate climate.

Key Highlights & Activities

Visitors can examine the khachkars (cross-stones) carved by Master Grigor, particularly the intricate "Amenaprkich" (All-Savior) khachkar located within the vestibule of St. Astvatsatsin Church. Exploration of the monastic grounds and the adjacent natural surroundings is permitted. Photography of the architectural elements is allowed.

Facts & Legends

A notable feature of Goshavank is the well-preserved water supply system, including a system of underground pipes and a cistern, demonstrating advanced engineering for its time. Legend states that Mkhitar Gosh was so dedicated to his work that he would not allow his beard to be cut, and it grew so long that he had to tie it up while writing.
