Historical & Ecological Origin

The area developed as a settlement for artisans and merchants during the 19th century, with many buildings dating from this period. It was revitalized in the early 21st century to preserve its architectural heritage. Dilijan is located in the Dilijan National Park, known for its temperate forest ecosystem.

Key Highlights & Activities

Visitors can walk the cobblestone streets, observing the architectural styles. Several buildings house artisan workshops (pottery, woodworking, carpet weaving) where demonstrations are offered. The Sharambeyan Street section is pedestrianized and contains most of the shops and galleries. Photography of the architecture is a primary activity.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Restrooms are available in select cafes and shops. Shade is provided by building overhangs and trees along some streets. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally available. Food vendors and cafes are present within the historic district, offering local cuisine.

Best Time to Visit

The best time for photography is during the morning or late afternoon when the sun angle creates distinct shadows on the stone and wood structures. Spring (April-May) and Autumn (September-October) offer mild weather. Summer months can be warm.

Facts & Legends

A local tradition states that the distinctive balconies on many buildings were designed to provide shade and shelter from rain, allowing residents to sit outside comfortably regardless of the weather.
