Visual Characteristics
The building features a distinctive twin-towered facade with a width of 38 meters. Its Neoclassical exterior is finished in light yellow plaster with white stone accents, characterized by a massive tympanum supported by Ionic columns. The interior is starkly minimalist in accordance with Protestant tradition, featuring white-washed walls, a capacity for 5,000 people, and a 19th-century pipe organ.

The current structure was built between 1805 and 1824, designed by architect Mihály Péchy, following the destruction of the medieval Saint Andrew Church by fire. It gained national historical significance on April 14, 1849, when Lajos Kossuth read the Declaration of Independence of Hungary from the Habsburg Dynasty within its walls.
Key Highlights & Activities
Kossuth’s Chair: The original armchair used by Lajos Kossuth during the 1849 Diet is preserved and on display.

The church is open daily for tourists, except during religious services or weddings. Morning light provides the best illumination for the main facade. On Sundays, the building is reserved for worship services in the morning and late afternoon.
Facts & Legends
The church is often called the "Watchman of Debrecen." A verified architectural detail is that the towers do not have spires; instead, they are topped with copper-domed "lanterns," a design choice made to ensure the structure remained stable on the sandy soil of the region.
