It is the oldest and most extensive topiary garden in the United States.

Historical & Ecological Origin

The property was acquired by Thomas and Alice Chace in 1872. The topiary work began in the early 20th century, with the majority of the sculptures created by Joseph Mott, a gardener employed by the Chace family. The garden was bequeathed to the Preservation Society of Newport County in 1972.
