Hakgala Botanical Garden is a botanical garden situated in Nuwara Eliya, Sri Lanka.
It is one of the five botanical gardens in Sri Lanka and is the second largest in the island.

Hakgala Botanical Garden is located 10 kilometers south of Nuwara Eliya town on the main road (A17) towards Badulla. Travel time from Nuwara Eliya town center is approximately 20 minutes by vehicle. Ample parking is available on-site. Public bus services operate frequently between Nuwara Eliya and Hakgala; look for buses heading towards Badulla.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Established in 1861 by Dr. William H. Harvey, the garden was initially intended for the cultivation of Cinchona, the source of quinine. It later transitioned to a focus on tea cultivation before becoming a botanical garden. Ecologically, it is situated in a montane region, benefiting from the cooler climate and higher rainfall characteristic of Sri Lanka's central highlands.

Visitors can explore the various themed gardens, including the Rose Garden, the Orchid House, and the Japanese Garden. Walking paths are provided throughout the grounds. Photography is permitted. Educational signage details plant species and their origins.

The garden is believed to be the site of the ancient Ravana Falls, mentioned in the Ramayana epic. Local folklore suggests it was a pleasure garden of King Ravana.
