Historical & Ecological Origin

Established in 1861 by Dr. William H. Harvey, the garden was initially intended for the cultivation of Cinchona, the source of quinine. It later transitioned to a focus on tea cultivation before becoming a botanical garden. Ecologically, it is situated in a montane region, benefiting from the cooler climate and higher rainfall characteristic of Sri Lanka's central highlands.

Restrooms are available within the garden premises. Shaded rest areas are located along the main pathways. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally reliable. Food vendors are not present inside the garden, but small eateries are located outside the main entrance.

Best Time to Visit

The garden is open daily from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM. The best time of day for photography is generally in the morning or late afternoon when the light is softer. The months of April to September offer pleasant weather, coinciding with the blooming seasons for many of the garden's flowers.
