It serves as a primary water source for irrigation and hydroelectric power generation in the region.

Visual Characteristics

The dam structure is composed of concrete, with a crest length of approximately 450 meters and a height of 75 meters. The reservoir it creates, often referred to as the Hassan Addakhil Lake, exhibits a deep blue hue when viewed from higher elevations, with its shoreline varying in texture from rocky outcrops to sandy deposits depending on water levels.

Location & Access Logistics

The dam is situated approximately 10 kilometers southwest of Errachidia. Access is via National Road 13 (N13), which passes directly by the dam's eastern edge. Ample parking is available at designated areas near the dam's crest and the visitor center. Public transport options directly to the dam are limited; however, local taxis from Errachidia can be hired for the journey.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Construction of the Hassan Addakhil Dam commenced in 1979 and was completed in 1987. It was designed by the Moroccan Ministry of Equipment and Transport. The dam's primary purpose was to regulate the flow of the Ziz River, providing irrigation for agricultural lands in the surrounding Tafilalet region and generating electricity.

Key Highlights & Activities

Visitors can walk across the dam's crest for panoramic views of the reservoir and the surrounding landscape. Photography is permitted from designated viewpoints. Fishing is allowed in the reservoir, subject to local regulations. Boat rentals are not available.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Restrooms are available at the visitor center located near the dam's eastern abutment. Limited shaded areas are present near the visitor center. Cell phone signal (4G) is generally available at the dam site. No food vendors are located directly at the dam; however, restaurants and cafes are available in Errachidia.

Best Time to Visit

For optimal lighting conditions for photography, early morning (08:00-10:00) and late afternoon (16:00-18:00) offer softer light. The best months for visiting are typically from March to May and September to November, when temperatures are moderate. Water levels in the reservoir fluctuate seasonally; check local reports for current conditions.

Facts & Legends

The reservoir created by the dam is one of the largest artificial lakes in Morocco. A local anecdote suggests that during exceptionally dry periods, the exposed lakebed reveals ancient pottery fragments, hinting at past settlements submerged by the dam's construction.
