Independence Rock is a prominent granite formation located in central Wyoming, west of Casper.

The formation is a large, exposed granite dome, approximately 193 feet (59 meters) high and covering about 7 acres (2.8 hectares). Its surface is weathered, exhibiting exfoliation and lichen growth. The granite is primarily gray with pinkish hues.

Location & Access Logistics

Independence Rock is situated approximately 50 miles (80 km) west of Casper, Wyoming, along Wyoming Highway 220. Access is via a paved road leading directly to the site. Ample parking is available at the base of the rock. No public transport services this location.

Historical & Ecological Origin

This geological feature is an erosional remnant of Precambrian granite, estimated to be around 2.8 billion years old. Historically, it served as a significant landmark on the Oregon, California, and Mormon Trails during the 19th century, with emigrants carving their names into its surface.

Key Highlights & Activities

Visitors can examine the historical emigrant inscriptions on the rock face. Hiking around the base of the formation is possible. Observation points offer views of the surrounding plains.

Restrooms are available at the site. Limited shade is provided by natural rock overhangs. Cell phone signal is generally weak to non-existent. No food vendors are present at the immediate location; visitors should bring their own provisions.

Best Time to Visit

For optimal lighting on the rock face and inscriptions, late afternoon is recommended. The best months for visiting are typically May through October, avoiding winter snow and ice. No tide considerations apply.

The rock is often referred to as the "Great Register of the Desert" due to the thousands of names and dates carved by pioneers. A specific tip for visitors is to look for the inscription "Pioneers 1847" which is one of the earliest recorded.
