International Maritime Museum, Hamburg, Germany, Europe
International Maritime Museum is a private museum housing the world's largest private collection of maritime artifacts, located in Hamburg's historic Speicherstadt.
Visual Characteristics
The museum is housed in Kaispeicher B, the oldest preserved warehouse in Hamburg (built 1878), featuring characteristic red-brick Neo-Gothic architecture and internal timber support structures. The collection spans nine "decks" (floors), displaying more than 40,000 miniature ships, 1 million photographs, and 15,000 uniforms. A visual center-piece is the "Golden Chamber" containing ship models made of precious metals.
Location & Access Logistics
Located at Koreastraße 1, 20457 Hamburg.
Public Transit: Served by U-Bahn line U4 (Überseequartier) or Bus 111 (Koreastraße).
On Foot: A 10-minute walk from the Elbphilharmonie or the Rathaus.
Parking: The nearest facility is the "Parkhaus Überseequartier."
Historical & Ecological Origin
The museum is based on the private collection of Peter Tamm, who began collecting model ships at age six. It opened in 2008 following a deal with the City of Hamburg to provide the historic warehouse. The building itself is a protected monument, showcasing 19th-century industrial engineering adapted for modern climate control to preserve delicate paper and bone artifacts.
Key Highlights & Activities
Deck 1 (Navigation): Features historic sextants, compasses, and a ship simulator where visitors can steer a container ship into Hamburg Harbor.
Deck 2 (Sailing Ships): Focuses on the era of wind-driven exploration and naval warfare.
The Bone Ships: A unique collection of ship models crafted by French prisoners of war during the Napoleonic Wars using soup bones.
Queen Mary 2: A massive model of the ocean liner made from approximately 1 million LEGO bricks, featuring internal lighting and sound.
Infrastructure & Amenities
The facility includes a specialized maritime bookstore, the "Alte Liebe" bistro, and comprehensive locker systems. It is fully wheelchair accessible via a central elevator system. Public restrooms are available on multiple decks. 5G signal is robust throughout the brick structure.
Best Time to Visit
The museum is open daily from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Due to the volume of exhibits (9 floors), allow at least 3–4 hours for a visit. To avoid school groups, visit on weekday afternoons.
Facts & Legends
The collection includes the original "International Code of Signals" and rare charts from the 16th century. A historical oddity is that Kaispeicher B served as a grain silo and later a storage for silk and cocoa before its conversion.
