Kandy Lake, Kandy, Sri Lanka, Asia
Kandy Lake is an artificial reservoir located in the heart of Kandy, Sri Lanka. It was created by draining a marshy area in front of the Temple of the Tooth Relic.
Visual Characteristics
The lake is roughly oval in shape, with a perimeter of approximately 3.5 kilometers. Its water color varies from a deep blue to a murky green depending on the season and light conditions. The lake is surrounded by a paved walkway and is bordered by the Royal Botanical Gardens to the west and the Temple of the Tooth Relic complex to the east. Several small islands are present within the lake, the largest of which is situated centrally.
Location & Access Logistics
Kandy Lake is situated in the central business district of Kandy. It is accessible via several main roads, including Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe Mawatha which encircles the lake. Parking is available in designated public lots around the city center, though it can be limited during peak hours. Public buses frequently service Kandy city, with stops located within a short walking distance of the lake. The Kandy railway station is approximately 1 kilometer south of the lake.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The lake was constructed in 1807 by King Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe, the last monarch of the Kingdom of Kandy. Its original purpose was to enhance the aesthetic appeal of the Temple of the Tooth Relic and to provide a defensive moat. The area was previously a marshland that was drained and dammed to form the reservoir.
Key Highlights & Activities
Walking the perimeter path offers views of the lake and surrounding city. Boat rentals are available for excursions on the water. Birdwatching is a common activity, with various waterfowl species observed. The walkway is also used for morning and evening strolls by local residents.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Restrooms are available at various points along the perimeter, particularly near the Temple of the Tooth. Shade is provided by trees lining sections of the walkway. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally strong around the lake. Food vendors and small eateries are located on the streets adjacent to the lake.
Best Time to Visit
For photography, early morning (6:00 AM - 8:00 AM) provides soft light and fewer crowds. Late afternoon (4:00 PM - 6:00 PM) also offers favorable lighting. The dry season, from December to March, generally offers clearer skies and more pleasant weather. There are no specific tide requirements as it is an artificial lake.
Facts & Legends
A local legend suggests that the king dug a tunnel from his palace to the island in the center of the lake, which was used as a secret escape route. While the existence of such a tunnel is unverified, it remains a popular story among residents.
