Karanji Lake, Mysore, India, Asia

Karanji Lake is a large, man-made lake situated within the city of Mysore, India. It serves as a significant urban wetland and a popular recreational area.

Visual Characteristics

The lake covers an area of approximately 90 acres. Its perimeter is largely defined by concrete embankments and walking paths. The water body itself is a brown-green hue, influenced by sediment and aquatic vegetation. Surrounding the lake are mature trees, primarily Indian fig trees (Ficus benghalensis) and tamarind trees (Tamarindus indica), providing significant canopy cover.

Location & Access Logistics

Karanji Lake is located at the southern edge of Mysore city, adjacent to the Mysore Zoo. It is approximately 3 kilometers south of the Mysore Palace. Access is via the Mysore Zoo Road. Ample parking is available within the Mysore Zoo premises, which is a paid facility. Public bus routes serving the Mysore Zoo also provide access to the lake; specifically, bus numbers 101 and 102 stop near the zoo entrance.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Karanji Lake was created in 1977 by the Mysore Urban Development Authority (MUDA) through the construction of a dam across a natural stream. Its primary purpose was to augment the water supply for the adjacent Mysore Zoo and to create a recreational space. Ecologically, it functions as a freshwater lake and a habitat for various bird species.

Key Highlights & Activities

Visitors can walk along the paved pathways encircling the lake. A dedicated butterfly park is located within the lake premises. Boating facilities are available on the lake. Birdwatching is a common activity due to the presence of resident and migratory species. A small aviary is also present.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Restrooms are available near the entrance and at designated points along the walking paths. Shade is provided by the mature trees. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally good within the area. Food vendors are present at the entrance to the lake and the adjacent zoo complex.

Best Time to Visit

The best time of day for photography is early morning or late afternoon when the light is softer. The months of September to March offer the most pleasant weather, with lower humidity and moderate temperatures. The lake's water level is generally consistent throughout the year, so tide considerations are not applicable.

Facts & Legends

Karanji Lake is recognized as one of the largest lakes in Mysore city. It is a designated Important Bird Area (IBA) by BirdLife International, supporting a diverse avian population, including species like the Painted Stork and the Spot-billed Pelican.
