Mysore Zoo, Mysore, India, Asia

The Mysore Zoo, officially the Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens, is a zoological park located in Mysore, Karnataka, India.

Visual Characteristics

The zoo covers an area of approximately 157 acres. It features a variety of enclosures designed to mimic natural habitats, including rocky outcrops, water bodies, and dense vegetation. The main administrative building is constructed with red brick and has a colonial architectural style.

Location & Access Logistics

The zoo is situated in the heart of Mysore city, adjacent to the Mysore Palace. It is approximately 2 km from the Mysore City Railway Station. Several city bus routes serve the area, with stops directly outside the zoo entrance. Auto-rickshaws and taxis are readily available. Parking is available on-site for cars and two-wheelers, with a fee.

Historical & Ecological Origin

The zoo was established in 1892 by Maharaja Sri Chamarajendra Wadiyar Bahadur. It was initially conceived as a private menagerie for the royal family and was later opened to the public. The grounds were developed from the existing palace gardens.

Key Highlights & Activities

Visitors can observe a collection of approximately 1,600 animals representing over 160 species. Specific exhibits include the tiger enclosure, the giraffe house, the elephant enclosure, and a dedicated section for primates. The zoo offers electric vehicle rides for navigating the grounds. Feeding sessions for certain animals are scheduled daily.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Restrooms are located at multiple points within the zoo. Shaded areas are provided by mature trees and some covered seating structures. Cell phone signal (4G) is generally available throughout the park. Food and beverage vendors operate within the zoo premises, offering snacks and meals.

Best Time to Visit

The best time of day for animal viewing is typically in the early morning or late afternoon when animals are more active. The months of September through February offer pleasant weather conditions with lower humidity. The zoo is open year-round, but avoiding the peak summer months (April-June) is recommended due to high temperatures.

Facts & Legends

The zoo is home to a white tiger named Raja, which was a significant attraction for many years. A unique feature is the zoo's commitment to conservation breeding programs for endangered species.
