Kaumana Caves, Hilo, USA Hawaii, North America

Kaumana Caves is a lava tube located east of Hilo, Hawaii, on the island of Hawaii.

Visual Characteristics

The cave entrance is a fissure in the earth's surface, approximately 10 meters wide and 5 meters high. Inside, the lava tube walls are composed of solidified basaltic lava, exhibiting a rough, porous texture. The interior is dark, with limited natural light penetrating from the entrance. Stalactites and stalagmites formed from mineral deposits are present in some sections. The floor is uneven, covered with loose rock and soil.

Location & Access Logistics

Kaumana Caves is situated approximately 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) east of Hilo's city center, accessible via the Saddle Road (Highway 200). The turnoff is clearly marked. Parking is available in a small, unpaved lot adjacent to the cave entrance. No public transport services directly reach the cave site.

Historical & Ecological Origin

This lava tube was formed by the 1881 eruption of Mauna Loa volcano. The molten lava flowed down the flank of the volcano, creating a subterranean channel that subsequently drained, leaving the hollow tube.

Key Highlights & Activities

Exploration of the lava tube is the primary activity. Visitors can walk into the cave for approximately 0.8 kilometers (0.5 miles) before the passage becomes too narrow or obstructed. The cave is unlit, requiring visitors to bring their own light sources. No guided tours are offered.

Infrastructure & Amenities

There are no facilities at the Kaumana Caves site. Restrooms, shade, food vendors, and cell phone signal are not available at the immediate location. Visitors should come prepared with their own lighting, water, and any necessary supplies.

Best Time to Visit

Daylight hours are recommended for access and visibility. The cave temperature remains constant year-round. No specific tide times are relevant.

Facts & Legends

Local lore suggests that the cave was once used as a shelter by ancient Hawaiians. A unique feature is the presence of a large stalagmite near the entrance that resembles a human figure.
