Established in 1978, the Pana'ewa Rainforest Zoo was developed on land previously used for agricultural purposes. It is situated within the native Hawaiian rainforest ecosystem, characterized by high rainfall and diverse plant life.

Observe over 80 species of animals, including native Hawaiian birds, Amazonian rainforest animals, and a tiger. Walk through the rainforest canopy on the elevated rainforest bridge. Visit the petting zoo area. Attend keeper talks scheduled daily.

The best time of day for animal viewing is generally in the morning or late afternoon when animals are more active. The climate is consistently warm and humid year-round, with higher rainfall typically occurring from November to March. No specific tide requirements apply.

The zoo is home to a white tiger named "Koa," a rare genetic variation. The surrounding rainforest is part of the Waiakea Forest Reserve, which has been a protected area for its ecological significance.
