Klefe Waterfalls, Ho, Ghana, Africa
Klefe Waterfalls is a multi-tiered seasonal cascade located in the Klefe traditional area near Ho, Ghana. The falls are situated within a rugged forest gorge, characterized by a series of drops over rocky escarpments that form part of the Togo mountain range.
Visual Characteristics
The falls consist of three distinct levels of cascading water over dark, metamorphic rock faces. During the peak flow, the water creates a white-water curtain that drops into shallow, pebble-lined splash pools. The surrounding environment is a dense semi-deciduous forest featuring ferns, moss-covered boulders, and towering hardwood trees that provide a continuous canopy over the watercourse.
Location & Access Logistics
The site is located in Klefe Ametefe, approximately 5km west of Ho. Access is via the winding Ho-Klefe road, which ascends the hills overlooking the regional capital. Visitors can reach the village by shared taxi from the Ho Central Market. From the village center, a guided 30-to-45-minute hike on a narrow, descending forest trail is required to reach the base of the falls. Private vehicle parking is available in designated clearings within the village.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The waterfalls are formed by the drainage of highland streams flowing off the Galenku-Klefe ridge. Geologically, the site is part of the Dahomeyan System, where resistant rock layers create the vertical drops. Historically, the falls served as a vital water source and a secluded retreat for the Klefe people; today, they are managed as a community-based ecotourism project to preserve the local watershed.
Key Highlights & Activities
The primary activities include hiking through the forest trails and photography of the various waterfall tiers. The shallow pools at the base are used for wading. Guided tours often include botanical information about the indigenous medicinal plants found along the trail. The upper tiers provide vantage points for viewing the forest interior and the geological layering of the cliff face.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Infrastructure at the falls is underdeveloped and prioritized for nature conservation. There are no modern restrooms, changing rooms, or food vendors at the site. Visitors must purchase supplies in Ho or Klefe village before beginning the descent. 4G cellular signal is intermittent at the base of the gorge but stable at the trailhead in the village. Shade is abundant throughout the site due to the dense forest cover.
Best Time to Visit
The falls are seasonal and best visited during or immediately after the rainy season, specifically from June to October, when the water volume is at its peak. During the dry season (December to March), the flow may reduce to a trickle. The best time of day for photography is between 10:00 and 14:00, when sunlight penetrates the canopy to illuminate the gorge floor.
Facts & Legends
Local oral history suggests that the cool micro-climate of the falls was once used by traditional healers to treat fever-related illnesses. A local "secret" tip is to request a visit to the "hidden" third tier, which requires a steeper climb but offers a more secluded environment away from the primary visitor path.
