Historical & Ecological Origin
The site was established in 1894 by Dr. Cyrus Teed and his followers, the Koreshan Unity, who believed in a hollow earth cosmology. The settlement was intended to be a self-sufficient utopian community. Ecologically, the park protects a vital section of the Southwest Florida mangrove estuary, a critical habitat for numerous bird and marine species.

Best Time to Visit
The best time for wildlife viewing and comfortable outdoor activity is during the cooler, drier months of November through April. Early morning or late afternoon offers optimal lighting for photography of the historic buildings and natural landscapes. Kayaking is best during high tide to navigate the river channels.
Facts & Legends
The Koreshans believed the Earth was hollow and that all of humanity lived on the inside surface. Dr. Teed, also known as "Koresh," claimed to be immortal and predicted the end of the world in 1900, after which his followers would ascend to a higher plane. The settlement was eventually dissolved after his death in 1908.
