La Cite du Vin, Bordeaux, France, Europe
La Cité du Vin is a cultural center and museum in Bordeaux, France, dedicated to the universal heritage of wine. Located in the Bassins à Flot district, it is housed in a distinct, swirling architectural structure designed by XTU Architects to evoke the flow of wine and the curves of a vine.
Visual Characteristics
The building features a 55-meter tower and an exterior clad in gold and silver aluminum panels and glass, designed to capture and reflect the light of the Garonne River. Inside, the architecture is characterized by curved wooden ribs and large-scale digital installations. The top floor, known as the Belvedere, offers a 360-degree panoramic view of Bordeaux and its surrounding vineyards through high-ceilinged glass walls.
Location & Access Logistics
The site is located at 134 Quai de Bacalan, 33300 Bordeaux. It is directly served by the Bordeaux Tramway Line B at the "Cité du Vin" station. It is also accessible via the Bat3 river shuttle from the city center (Quinconces or Place de la Bourse). For vehicle access, the "Parking Interparking Cité du Vin" is located 100 meters away.
Hours: Monday–Thursday, 10:00–18:00. Note: Currently listed as closed on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays for seasonal or maintenance reasons; verify current status before travel.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Inaugurated in 2016, the project was led by the Foundation for Wine Culture and Civilisations. The site was historically part of the industrial docks of Bordeaux. The building's design prioritizes environmental impact, utilizing a natural ventilation system and recycled materials in its construction. It is situated on the alluvial banks of the Garonne, near the confluence with the Bassins à Flot.
