Access is via Riverfront Park Road, which is off of South Sterling Road. Parking is available in a dedicated gravel lot adjacent to the pier entrance, with capacity for approximately 20 vehicles. Public transport options are limited; however, the RTA bus route 10 stops within a 1-mile walk at the corner of South Sterling Road and Verot School Road.

The Lafayette Fishing Pier was constructed in 1998 by the Lafayette City Parks Department as part of the Riverfront Park development project. Its original purpose was to enhance public access to the Vermilion River for recreational fishing and to promote the use of the riverfront area.
