Lake Willoughby, Newport VT, USA Vermont, North America

Lake Willoughby is a glacially-carved lake located in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont, USA. It is situated within the town of Westmore, approximately 10 kilometers east of Newport, Vermont.

Visual Characteristics

The lake is characterized by its deep, clear, cold water, with depths reaching over 300 feet. Its shape is elongated, running roughly north-south. The surrounding landscape is dominated by steep, forested cliffs, notably Mount Pisgah to the east and Mount Hor to the west, which rise sharply from the water's edge. The water color varies from deep blue to green depending on depth and light conditions. The shoreline is primarily rocky with some gravelly areas.

Location & Access Logistics

Access to Lake Willoughby is primarily via Vermont Route 5A, which runs along the eastern shore. The lake is approximately a 15-minute drive from Newport, VT. Parking is available at designated pull-offs and a small public beach area on the eastern side of the lake. There are no public transport routes directly serving the lake.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Lake Willoughby is a classic example of a finger lake, formed by glacial erosion during the last ice age. The glaciers carved out the deep valley, and subsequent glacial retreat left behind the elongated body of water. The surrounding mountains are part of the Green Mountains range.

Key Highlights & Activities

Swimming is permitted at the designated beach area. Kayaking and canoeing are popular activities, allowing exploration of the lake's length. Hiking trails are present on both Mount Pisgah and Mount Hor, offering elevated views of the lake. Fishing is permitted, with species including lake trout and landlocked salmon.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Restrooms are available at the public beach area. Limited shade is provided by trees near the beach. Cell phone signal is intermittent, particularly in deeper sections of the lake and at the base of the cliffs. No food vendors are located directly at the lake; provisions should be obtained in nearby Newport or Westmore.

Best Time to Visit

For swimming and boating, the months of July and August offer the warmest water temperatures. For hiking, late spring (May-June) and early autumn (September-October) provide cooler conditions and fall foliage. The best time of day for photography is generally late afternoon when the western light illuminates Mount Pisgah.

Facts & Legends

Lake Willoughby is one of the deepest lakes in Vermont. Local lore sometimes refers to a large, unseen creature inhabiting its depths, though no scientific evidence supports this.
