The Langkawi Cable Car was completed in 2003. It was designed to provide access to the upper reaches of Mount Machinchang, a 713-meter-high mountain formed from ancient granite rock. The mountain is part of the Kilim Karst Geoforest Park, a UNESCO Global Geopark.

The primary activity is the ascent and descent via the cable car. At the summit, visitors can walk across the Langkawi Sky Bridge, a curved pedestrian bridge suspended between two mountain peaks. Observation decks are available at the top station.
