Laxman Jhula is situated in the Tapovan area of Rishikesh, approximately 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) north of the main Rishikesh city center. Access is via State Highway 73 (Rishikesh-Badrinath Road). Parking is available in designated lots near the bridge entrance, with fees typically applied. Local auto-rickshaws and taxis provide transport from Rishikesh bus station and railway station. Bus route number 4 connects the main Rishikesh bus stand to the vicinity of Laxman Jhula.

The original iron suspension bridge was built in 1889. It was rebuilt in 1924 after damage from a flood. The bridge was named after the Hindu deity Rama's younger brother, Lakshmana, who is said to have crossed the Ganges at this spot using a jute rope bridge.
