Leuven's Old Market (Oude Markt), Leuven, Belgium, Europe

The Oude Markt (Old Market) in Leuven is a historic rectangular square internationally renowned as the "longest bar in the world." This nickname stems from the dense concentration of more than 30 bars, cafes, and restaurants that line the square, their terraces forming a continuous outdoor seating area.

Visual Characteristics

The square is defined by its long, narrow shape ($174\text{m} \times 35\text{m}$) and is paved entirely with traditional Belgian cobblestones. It is surrounded by high-reaching Flemish Renaissance-style townhouses with distinctive gables. While many of these buildings were destroyed during the world wars, they were meticulously reconstructed to maintain their 18th-century aesthetic.

De Kotmadam: A prominent bronze statue of a woman sitting on a bench, honoring the traditional landladies who looked after generations of university students.

Historic Pumps: The square features two historic water pumps: the functioning Sint-Janspomp and the decorative Collegepomp (dating to 1724).

Location & Access Logistics

Position: Located in the center of Leuven, immediately west of the Grote Markt (Grand Market).

Access: The square is a strictly pedestrian-only zone.

Transport: * Train: A 15-minute walk from Leuven Railway Station.

Bus: The "Rector De Somerplein" bus hub is 200 meters away.

Parking: Underground parking is available nearby at Parking Ladeuze or Parking Center.

Historical & Ecological Origin

The Oude Markt was the city's original economic heart, receiving market rights as early as 1150. When the "new" Grote Markt was built in the 15th century for administrative and religious purposes, the Oude Markt remained the primary site for trade. Following the Great Fire of Leuven in 1914, the square underwent significant reconstruction. Today, it serves as the social epicenter for the KU Leuven, one of Europe's oldest universities.

Key Highlights & Activities

Stella Artois: As the home of the world-famous brewery, the Oude Markt is the definitive place to consume fresh Stella Artois pilsner.

Events:

Hapje-Tapje (August): A massive culinary festival featuring a "barmen’s race" and food stalls.

Beleuvenissen (July): A series of free Friday night open-air concerts.

Student Welcome (September): An annual event marking the start of the academic year for thousands of students.

Infrastructure & Amenities

The square is optimized for social interaction, with heated terraces for winter and expansive parasols for summer. Public restrooms are located beneath the nearby University Library or within the numerous catering establishments. 4G/5G signal is excellent, and the city provides free public Wi-Fi ("Leuven Free Wi-Fi").

Best Time to Visit

Summer Evenings: For the full "longest bar" experience, Friday and Saturday nights in the summer offer the most vibrant atmosphere.

Daytime: Ideal for those wishing to appreciate the architecture or have a quiet coffee without the student crowds.

Winter: During the Christmas season, the square is festively lit and offers a cozy, historic ambiance.

Facts & Legends

Underground History: Archaeological excavations in the 1990s revealed that parts of the city's historic population were once buried beneath the adjoining squares.

The Nickname: The term "longest bar" is unofficial but recognized globally; if all the bar counters on the square were placed end-to-end, they would exceed several hundred meters in length.
