It is accessible via US Highway 83 (also known as Memorial Highway in Bismarck). From downtown Bismarck, travel west on Main Street, which becomes US Highway 83. The bridge is approximately 2 miles from the Bismarck city center. Ample parking is available on both the Bismarck and Mandan sides of the river, particularly in designated lots near the riverfront parks. Public transport options are limited; however, Bismarck-Mandan Transit bus routes may service areas near the bridge approaches.

Construction of the Liberty Memorial Bridge began in 1920 and was completed in 1922. It was built to commemorate North Dakota soldiers who served in World War I. The bridge was designed by the engineering firm of Waddell & Harrington. The Missouri River in this area is a glacial river, shaped by past ice ages.
