Public transport options are limited; however, Bismarck Transit Route 3 stops within a 0.5 km walk of the park's eastern entrance.

The area was historically part of the Missouri River floodplain. Development of Riverfront Park began in the late 1960s as part of a city initiative to utilize and protect the riverfront. The park's ecological context is that of a riparian zone within the Northern Great Plains.
