Ample paved parking is available at multiple points within the park, including near the main pavilion and the marina. Public transport options are limited; however, Bismarck Transit Route 3 stops within a 0.5 km walk of the park's eastern entrance.

The area was historically part of the Missouri River floodplain. Development of Riverfront Park began in the late 1960s as part of a city initiative to utilize and protect the riverfront. The park's ecological context is that of a riparian zone within the Northern Great Plains.

Activities include walking, jogging, and cycling on the paved trails. Fishing is permitted from the riverbank and the park's fishing pier. Kayaking and canoeing launch points are available.
