Lori Fortress is located approximately 3 kilometers north of Vanadzor's city center. Access is via the M-6 highway, turning onto local roads leading to the fortress site. Parking is available at the base of the hill. Public transport options are limited; local bus routes do not directly serve the fortress, requiring a walk from the nearest stops in Vanadzor.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Construction of Lori Fortress began in the 11th century, commissioned by King David II of the Kingdom of Tashir-Dzoraget. Its original purpose was to serve as a defensive stronghold and administrative center for the region.

Exploration of the remaining defensive walls and foundations is possible. Visitors can observe the strategic placement of the fortress on the elevated terrain. No organized tours are currently available.

For photography, early morning or late afternoon provides optimal lighting conditions due to the sun's angle. The months of May through October offer the most favorable weather for outdoor exploration, with lower precipitation and moderate temperatures.

Facts & Legends

A local legend suggests that a secret tunnel once connected the fortress to the Pambak River, allowing for water access during sieges. Archaeological evidence for this tunnel has not been definitively confirmed.
