Odzun Monastery is a 7th-century Armenian Apostolic monastery located in the village of Odzun, Lori Province, Armenia.

It is situated approximately 5 kilometers north of the city of Vanadzor.

Visual Characteristics

The monastery complex consists of two churches and a separate bell tower. The main church, St. Gregory Church, is a basilica constructed from dark grey and black basalt stone. It features a cruciform plan with a central dome. The exterior walls are adorned with relief carvings, notably a large depiction of Christ in Majesty above the western entrance and scenes from the Old and New Testaments on the southern facade. The smaller church, St. Astvatsatsin Church, is also built of basalt and has a simpler design. The bell tower is a three-story structure with arched openings.

Odzun Monastery is located in the village of Odzun, Lori Province. From Vanadzor, take the M6 highway north towards Alaverdi. Turn off the M6 onto the road signposted for Odzun. The monastery is situated within the village center. Parking is available on-site, with designated areas for vehicles. Public transport options include local buses that run from Vanadzor to Odzun village; the monastery is a short walk from the bus stop.

Historical & Ecological Origin

The main church, St. Gregory Church, is believed to have been constructed in the 7th century, with significant renovations and additions occurring in the 10th and 11th centuries. The exact architect is unknown. Its original purpose was as a religious center and pilgrimage site. The smaller church, St. Astvatsatsin, is thought to be older, possibly dating to the 5th or 6th century, though its current form reflects later modifications. The bell tower was added in the 13th century.

A notable feature of Odzun Monastery is the large, intricately carved stone canopy over the main altar of St. Gregory Church, which is unique in Armenian church architecture. Local tradition states that the monastery was built on the site where St. Gregory the Illuminator preached.
