Mainz Cathedral, Mainz, Germany, Europe
Mainz Cathedral (Mainzer Dom), officially the High Cathedral of St. Martin, is a Romanesque imperial cathedral and the most prominent landmark of the Mainz skyline.
Visual Characteristics
The cathedral is a massive, three-aisled Romanesque basilica constructed from deep red sandstone. It features a distinctive "double-choir" layout with two chancels at opposite ends. The exterior is dominated by six towers, including a massive central crossing tower with a baroque top. The interior is characterized by its high, dark nave and a collection of monumental tombs and sculptures along the pillars.

Commissioned by Archbishop Willigis around 975 AD. It was intended to be a "second Rome" to reflect the Archbishop's power as the Archchancellor of the Holy Roman Empire. The cathedral has survived seven major fires and several sieges. For centuries, it served as the site for the coronation of German kings and emperors.

Facts & Legends
A technical oddity is the cathedral’s foundation; due to the marshy ground near the Rhine, it was originally built on thousands of oak piles. When the water table dropped in the 19th century, the wood began to rot, necessitating a massive concrete underpinning project. Legend states that Willigis chose the wheel as his coat of arms (now the symbol of the city) because he was the son of a wheelwright and wanted to remain humble despite his high office.
