Visual Characteristics

The mission church features a barrel-vaulted ceiling and a facade constructed from locally quarried limestone. The exterior walls are approximately 4 feet thick. The main structure is a single nave church with a bell tower. The complex includes a convento (friar's quarters) and workshops surrounding a central courtyard. The roof is primarily tile.

Public transport options include VIA Metropolitan Transit bus routes 40 and 42, which stop directly in front of the mission.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Founded in 1716 by Franciscan missionaries in East Texas, the mission was relocated to its current site in 1731. Its original purpose was to convert indigenous populations to Christianity and integrate them into Spanish society. The architecture reflects Baroque influences adapted to local materials and labor.
