Historical & Ecological Origin

Construction of the current structure began in 1902 and was completed in 1920, replacing an earlier church built in 1749. The architect was Robert B. Kelly. The original purpose was to serve as the principal church for the Catholic population of San Antonio and the surrounding region.

Best Time to Visit

For photography of the exterior, morning light (approximately 8:00 AM - 10:00 AM) provides direct illumination on the facade. For interior visits, weekdays between 10:00 AM and 3:00 PM offer the fewest crowds. Weather is generally temperate year-round, with spring (March-May) and fall (September-November) offering the most comfortable outdoor conditions.

The original mission church, Mission San Antonio de Valero (The Alamo), was established by Franciscans in 1718. The remains of several Texas heroes, including those who fought at the Battle of the Alamo, are interred within the cathedral's crypt.
