Motu Tikehau, Tikehau, French Polynesia, Australia
Motu Tikehau is a coral atoll located in the Tuamotu Archipelago of French Polynesia.
It is part of the Tikehau commune and is situated approximately 300 kilometers northeast of Tahiti.
Visual Characteristics
Motu Tikehau is characterized by its crescent-shaped coral reef enclosing a lagoon. The motu (islets) are covered with coconut palms and low-lying vegetation. The lagoon water exhibits varying shades of blue and turquoise, with coral formations visible beneath the surface. The sand on the motu is fine and pale.
Location & Access Logistics
Access to Motu Tikehau is primarily via Tikehau Airport (TIH), which is located on the main motu. The airport is served by Air Tahiti flights from Papeete (PPT) on Tahiti. From the airport, transfers to accommodations are typically arranged by hotels and pensions, often involving boat transport across the lagoon. There are no public roads connecting the motu to the main island of Tikehau village. The village is located on a separate motu and is accessible by boat.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Motu Tikehau is a coral atoll, formed by the accumulation of coral polyps over a submerged volcanic seamount. The atoll structure is a result of geological processes and marine life over millennia. The motu themselves are built up from coral debris and sand deposited by ocean currents.
Key Highlights & Activities
Activities include snorkeling and diving within the lagoon and along the outer reef. Birdwatching is a significant activity, as the atoll is a protected bird sanctuary. Fishing excursions are available. Kayaking and paddleboarding within the lagoon are also possible. Visits to the Tikehau village offer insight into local life.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Accommodations on Motu Tikehau consist of resorts and pensions, which provide amenities such as restaurants, private bungalows, and organized activities. Restrooms are available at these establishments. Shade is provided by palm trees and resort structures. Cell phone signal (4G) is generally available within resort areas and the village, but can be intermittent on more remote parts of the motu. Food vendors are primarily located in the Tikehau village.
Best Time to Visit
The best time for weather is during the dry season, from May to October, with average temperatures around 27-30°C. For optimal visibility for snorkeling and diving, the period between April and November is recommended. High tide is generally preferred for accessing certain reef areas. The morning hours offer softer light for photography.
Facts & Legends
Motu Tikehau is renowned for its high density of fish, including numerous species of sharks, manta rays, and dolphins, making it a significant marine biodiversity hotspot. Jacques Cousteau described Tikehau's lagoon as one of the most beautiful in the world.
