Tikehau Lagoon, Tikehau, French Polynesia, Australia
Tikehau Lagoon is an atoll located in the Tuamotu Archipelago of French Polynesia. It is characterized by its circular shape and a coral reef system enclosing a body of water.
Visual Characteristics
The lagoon's water exhibits a pale pink hue due to the fine coral sand. The surrounding motus (islets) are covered with dense coconut palm groves and low-lying vegetation. The coral reef crest is visible at low tide, forming a distinct boundary.
Location & Access Logistics
Tikehau Atoll is situated approximately 300 kilometers northeast of Tahiti. Access is primarily via Tikehau Airport (TIH), which receives flights from Papeete, Tahiti. From the airport, transfers to accommodations are typically arranged by hotels, often involving boat transport across the lagoon. There are no public roads connecting the main motus to the airport or to each other for independent travel.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Tikehau is a coral atoll, formed by the gradual subsidence of a volcanic island and the subsequent growth of coral reefs around its perimeter. The atoll's formation is a result of geological processes occurring over millions of years. The lagoon itself is a marine ecosystem rich in biodiversity.
Key Highlights & Activities
Snorkeling and diving are primary activities, with notable sites including the Tuamotu Passage (a channel connecting the lagoon to the ocean) and the Pink Sand Beach. Birdwatching is also a significant activity, with the atoll serving as a nesting ground for numerous seabird species. Fishing within the lagoon is permitted under local regulations.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Accommodations on Tikehau consist mainly of pensions and a few small resorts. Restrooms and basic amenities are available at these establishments. Cell phone signal (4G) is generally available within resort areas but can be intermittent on outer motus. Food vendors are limited to the restaurants within accommodations; there are no independent food stalls or markets on the atoll.
Best Time to Visit
The dry season, from May to October, offers the most favorable weather conditions with lower humidity and less rainfall. The best time of day for underwater photography is generally between 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM when sunlight penetration is optimal. Tidal conditions are less critical for most lagoon activities, but specific dive sites may have optimal currents at certain tidal phases.
Facts & Legends
Tikehau is known as the "Pink Island" due to the high concentration of crushed coral fragments that give its sand and lagoon waters a distinctive rosy tint. The atoll is also recognized as one of the most pristine in the Tuamotu Archipelago, with a particularly high density of fish species.
